We are almost at the halfway mark of 2026, so it’s a good time to look ahead at some important upcoming dates.
September 15th: Estimated Tax Payments for the 3rd quarter are due for the self-employed or those who do not have automated withholding from other sources of income.
October 1st: FAFSA and CSS Profile open date. Planning to apply for financial aid for the upcoming school year? Both the FAFSA and CSS Profile are first available in October each year.
October 15th: Medicare Open Enrollment Begins. Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15th through December 7th and allows current Medicare beneficiaries to review and make changes to their Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage for the following year. This is for individuals who do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to their employer healthcare coverage beyond age 65.
October 15th: Tax Filing Deadline with Extension. If you filed for an extension in completing your 2025 return, October 15, 2026 is the deadline to get it to the IRS. October 15th is also the deadline to make a 2025 SEP IRA contribution, if eligible.
December 31st: At the end of the year, there are various deadlines to keep in mind (see below). It’s important to not wait until the last day of the year, though to prevent processing delays:
- Deadline for year-end charitable giving
- Deadline for most employee 401(k) salary-deferral contributions for the 2026 tax year
- Deadline to complete Roth conversions, in order to be taxed in 2026
- Deadline to complete any Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
